The origin of this box is unknown. It was obtained at an estate sale. At first we thought it was one of those oddities from the home decor section of TJMaxx or Marshalls, but it turned out to be hand-built out of solid hardwood.
We have not found anything like it yet online. The inside is quite pristine and shows little signs of use, with a gorgeous wood knot at the bottom emitting a heavenly scent. The picture on the lid is a print of a painting from 1898 by Michael Brown, which was commissioned by the Duddingston Golf Club in Edinburgh, Scotland. The image has been reversed and cropped from its original intended orientation. The box is quite large: 11.5 inches across, 10.5 inches on the sides, and 6.75 inches tall with the lid on. The hinges are secure and the lid closes evenly. There are some time-honored scuffs. The coin in the photos used for scale is not included!
